INSTRUCTORS
David Chen
Mr. Chen is a former choreographer and dance instructor of the Shanghai Opera and Dance Theatre. In his forty-year dance career, he performed numerous dances, as well as choreographed over thirty dances including such notable pieces as "Pantheon of Chinese Gods", "Heroine Hua Mulan", "Armor of the King" and "Peach-Flower Fan". He also taught dances at the Shanghai Dance Academy, Shanghai Dance Theatre and many other national dance troupes. He is well known in China for his mastery of Chinese classical and folk forms and is renowned for his intense teaching techniques. At a young age, Mr. Chen also studied martial arts under Shao-Lin grand Master Lu Zhenduo. He practices and teachers martial arts and is famous for his swordshipman. In 1984, in conjunction with a computer engineer, he led a group in the study of "The System of Computerized Dance Language". The group did pioneering work on "The Art of Dance information", "The Art of Dance Language" and engineered the computerization of dance information. He is also a former member of the editorial staff of the Shanghai Chapter of the "Chinese National and Folk Dance Collective".
Mr. Chen came to the United States is 1987 and was an assistant instructor at the American Conservatory Theatre, helping in "Marco Millions" and other plays that involved Chinese culture. He was also a dance instructor at the "Chung Ngai Dance Troupe" and the "Chinese Folk Dance Association". In 1991 he was Artistic Director of the "Stars Performing Arts Company of San Jose". In 1992, he started "David’s Dance Workshop", served as the Vice President of the "Chinese American Artists Association", and co-founded "Bridge and Gate Productions" with Dr. Christina Yao. From 1991 to 1995 he helped Alumni Association of University of Taiwan by directing a number of Chinese dramas. In June 1995, he founded the Academy of Chinese Performing Arts. In 2002, Mr. Chen founded the "Bridge and Gate International Cultural Foundation" with friends as the President.
Xinge Lin
Ms. Xinge Lin is the chief choreographer and instructor of the Shanghai Ballet Company . She has choreographed ‘Thunderstorm" , "Coppeli" (Chinese version) etc. And honorably won the prize of Excellent Choreography. With Shanghai Ballet Company, she visits Japan , France, Canada, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. In December 1993, she was invited by the Mastuyama Ballet of to be their guest instructor. She was invited to the United States by the San Francisco Ballet. In addition ,she is teaching at Contra Costa ballet school and the Diablo Ballet Company. She also was dean of Ballet School of Chinese Academy of Performing Arts during 1995-2000 . She is a former and excellent teacher.
Lihua Qian
Ms. Qian was a member of the Dancers Association of China and a star performer of the Shanghai Dance Troupe. She graduated from the Shanghai Dance Academy and was trained in classical dance, folk dance and ballet. She was the winner of many awards in numerousdance competitions, and has performed in Japan and the United States during tours with the troupe. She also performed in dance sequences in the TV series ?he Chinese Pantheon of Goods . Widely acclaimed for her dancing skills, she performed for Bridge and Gate Productions and is an instructor of folk dancing at ACPA.
Sherina Li
Ms. Li is a member of the Chinese Dancers Association. She graduated from Gansu Province Art Institute in 1980. After graduation, she was selected to play the leading role of Ying Niang in the Dance Drama the Silk Road Strewn with Flowers? which brough her the first place award at the Province Competition. In 1988; she was invited to Beijing to play the leading role in the dance drama song of Perpetual Regrets? She also toured many countries including the United States, Japan, France, Italy and Turkey, and was recognized as an outstanding actor and dancer.
Jie Chang
Ms. Chang is a member of the
Chinese Dancers Association. She started dance at age 6 in Nanjing Xiao Honghua Troupe, a well-known children's art school in China. Afterwards she became a professional dancer and worked in many literature and art organizations in Nanjing and Beijing. She has extensive experience in performing and teaching. Before she came to the U.S.A., she taught Chinese dance in Canada for 5 years and her students won a number of prizes in national dance competitions in Vancuver and Edmonton.
Xiao Tao
Ms. Tao, an ethnic of Bulang, starting from age 7, was trained in Youth Dance Troupe Administritive District Cultural Palace. Xiao did many tours with the Singing and Dancing Troupe and performed dances of the Han, Dai, Aini, Wa, Yi and Zang ethnics. At age 11, Xiao participated in the First Youth Dance Meeting of Yunnan Province, played the main character in an Aini Dance Drama "Seedling Breeding" and won Excellent Performance Prize. At age 19, she was the main actress in the dance team of Tsinghua University, together with the team, she toured performing dances. The dances she performed were solo "Water", "Little Peacock", trio "The Poem of the Sea", historical dance poem " Remembrance of Fire in the Winter ", group dance "4:30". Xiao graduated from Tsinghua University in 1988. In January of 1989,she won the first prize in Beijing Dance Competition for the dance of "Little Peacock", choreographed by herself. Xiao came to the U.S. in 1990. Though abroad , she never stopped pursuing the art of dance.
Under the guidance and help of her brother , a first class national dance choreographer, she deepened her love for the dance culture of Yunnan ethnic minority and furthered her study of it.
Alicia Perusse
Alicia Perusse has been acting and performing for stage and film since the age of six. She holds a BA in Communication and Theatre from Juniata college, an actor training certificate from the American Conservatory Theater and an MA in Performance Theory/Theatre from San Jose State University. She has also studied the craft of acting in England, UK and New York. Alicia has been taught drama to children for such organizations as the Children’s Musical Theatre of San Jose and Starting Arts and continues to teach drama in public school enrichment programs. She most recently directed a production of ‘Into the Woods’ at Ponderosa Elementary School. Alicia is thrilled to be working with ACPA on Malan Flower and hopes that all enjoy the show.
Willie Anderson
Willie Anderson is a soloist with Ballet San Jose. Joining the company in 1997, Mr. Anderson has danced numerous roles as principal and corps. Featured roles included Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Caliban in The Tempest, The Mouse King in The Nutcracker and performances in Donald McKayle's Rainbow 'Round My Shoulders, and District Storyville, Roland Petit's Carmen, Flemming Flindt’s Out of Africa and Dennis Nahat's Blue Suede Shoes. Mr. Anderson has performed as a guest with Compagnie Ebene in Paris and Capital City Ballet in his hometown of Atlanta.
He also has Sing and danced in "Me and My Girl" with the Marin Theatre Company and his teaching experiences: Ballethnic Academy of Dance in Atlanta, GA, Cleveland San Jose Ballet School, Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theater, Ballet San Jose School, Making The Pointe Ballet Academy, Mission Dance and Performing Arts, Yoko’s Dance and Performing Arts, Michelle’s Dance X-plosion , Ohlone Community College and currently teaching ballet at its summer outreach program at University Of California Berkeley — Cal performances — Aileycamp.
Preston Dugger
Preston Dugger III born in Washington D.C. recieved formal training from The Washington Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and Houston Ballet. During Mr. Dugger's completion of High School he was offered a job with the world renouned Dance Theatre Of Harlem where he danced principal roles in such ballet's as Agon, Fancy Free, The Four Temperaments and Dougla. After the demise of Dance Theatre Of Harlem Mr. Dugger decided to move west and joined Ballet San Jose which has been his new home and has been featured in ballet's such as Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and Blue Suede Shoes recently Mr.Dugger had a wonderful opportunity to choreograpgh on the company and premiered his first piece intitled ''Langushing For Love.'' This is Mr. Dugger's first year teaching for ACPA but looks forward teaching in the near future.
Tim Ma
Professional dancer, he's from China Oriental Song and Dance Troupe. From 1993 to 1997, he graduated from Yunnan Art Institute-dance Dept. From 1997 to 2001,he continued his formal dance education in Beijing Dance Institute. Afterwards ,he was worked in China oriental Song and Dance Troupe. He was a main cast in many dance dramas, Tim won the first place many times in the China dance competition.Tim has study ballet, China classical dance and many kinds of folk dance including China folk dance.Spanish dance,Indian dance, Irish Tap. etc. With China Oriental Song and Dance Troupe. Tim visited many countries and cities, including the US, Swiss, Germany, Spanish, and Japan. he has extensive dance experience, and he also can teaches YOGa.
Haitao Wu
Mr. Wu is a professional Peking Opera artist graduated from Heibei Vocational Art School. He performed regularly with the school's art troupe. His performances includes: CCTV Chinese New Year program from 1996 - 1999, and CCTV's Chinese Opera Performance Series. He later works in Beijing Kunqu Theater. While with Beijing Kunqu Theater, Mr. Wu was invited to perform in "Peony Pavilion- Young Lovers' Edition", a Gansu Province Kunqu Theater production with Artistic Director Bai Xianyong. He later travelled with the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe and performed "Peony Pavilion - Young Lovers' Edition" in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States of America. Currently, Mr. Haitao Wu is a faculty member of the Academy of Chinese Performing Arts (ACPA) with goal to foster Peking Opera in the Bay Area.
Yunchao Yang
Mr. Yang is a professional Peking Opera artist graduated from Heibei Vocational Art School. He performed regularly with the school's art troupe. His performances includes: CCTV Chinese New Year program from 1996 - 1999, and CCTV's Chinese Opera Performance Series. He later works in Beijing Kunqu Theater. Jessalyn Espiritu
Jessalyn is a native of the Bay Area and a graduate from the University of California Santa Barbara. She has extensive training in Hip Hop, Lyrical, Jazz and Ballroom. Presently she is working with the 2010/2011 NFL Oakland Raiderette’s assisting as one of the Co-Choreographers. Currently Jessalyn is a dancing with Silhouette, in addition to being one of the choreographers for the Valley Christian High School Cheer team. She continues to teach and choreograph across the bay area and country. Jessalyn is a former Captain of Spy Girls, San Jose NLL Stealth dance team. She has worked with artists such as “Weird Al” Yankovic, LL Cool J, Amerie and choreographed the Oregon tour for the Universal Recording Artist Dol Re’. Jessalyn was the Dance Captain and dancer in the show “Mixed Element” staged at California’s Great America. She had the lead female role as Doris in the musical “School of Rock Live” the musical and was one of four back-up dancers in the touring Las Vegas “Legends In Concert” show. She is an alumni member and choreographer of Fusion Latina, Culture Shock S.F./Oakland, and Phaze II. Jessalyn is devoted to her craft, committed to sharing her dance knowledge, education, and passion for life with students and dancers of all ages.
Jun Wang
Ms. Jun Wang, member of the Chinese Dancers Association, received her formal training in Chinese dance from Shanghai Oriental Youth Dance Troupe in Shanghai, China. She later furthered her studies and completed her teaching credential program at the Shanghai Theatre Academy - School of Opera and Dance. Upon graduation, she joined the faculty of the Chinese Dance Department at the Academy. Besides teaching at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Jun also taught Chinese dance at the China Welfare Institute in Shanghai.
Nancy Lou
Ms. Nancy Lou received extensive training in Ballet at the Shanghai Ballet School. She later enrolled in Shanghai University of Drama and Dance majoring in Ballet. While pursuing her ballet studies at the university, Nancy joined the Shanghai Ballet Company as Apprentice. She was also a visiting scholar at John Neumeier – Hamburg Ballet School in Germany. Besides Hamburg Ballet School, Nancy also travelled to Washington, DC to further her ballet studies at the Kirov Academy of Ballet.
Wei Jiang
An enthusiast in drama and theatre arts, Mr. Wei Jiang was accepted to the Director program offered by The Central Academy of Drama. After graduation, Mr. Jiang began his director career and had directed many drama and movies for various organizations including: The Central Academy of Drama Experimental Theatre, Marvelous Entertainment in Japan, CCTV – Movie Chanel, Huayi Bros. Media Group, and The Chinese People’s Armed Police Force Academy – Department for the Arts. He later furthered his directing and theatre studies and completed his MFA program in the United States. In 2008, he directed the movie “Tong,Qing”, and his work was nominated for Best Picture in the Tokyo’s CON-CAN International Film Festival. In the same year, he directed a history drama “De Ling and Empress Dowager” and the drama was shown on the opening day of the Third Asian Drama for Education Symposium. In 2009, he directed “My Only Daughter”. His work was invited to participate at the 11th Shanghai International Arts Festival in Shanghai, China.
