INSTRUCTORS
David Chen
Mr. Chen is a former choreographer and dance instructor of the Shanghai Opera and Dance Theatre. In his forty-year dance career, he performed numerous dances, as well as choreographed over thirty dances including such notable pieces as "Pantheon of Chinese Gods", "Heroine Hua Mulan", "Armor of the King" and "Peach-Flower Fan". He also taught dances at the Shanghai Dance Academy, Shanghai Dance Theatre and many other national dance troupes. He is well known in China for his mastery of Chinese classical and folk forms and is renowned for his intense teaching techniques. At a young age, Mr. Chen also studied martial arts under Shao-Lin grand Master Lu Zhenduo. He practices and teachers martial arts and is famous for his swordshipman. In 1984, in conjunction with a computer engineer, he led a group in the study of "The System of Computerized Dance Language". The group did pioneering work on "The Art of Dance information", "The Art of Dance Language" and engineered the computerization of dance information. He is also a former member of the editorial staff of the Shanghai Chapter of the "Chinese National and Folk Dance Collective".
Mr. Chen came to the United States is 1987 and was an assistant instructor at the American Conservatory Theatre, helping in "Marco Millions" and other plays that involved Chinese culture. He was also a dance instructor at the "Chung Ngai Dance Troupe" and the "Chinese Folk Dance Association". In 1991 he was Artistic Director of the "Stars Performing Arts Company of San Jose". In 1992, he started "David’s Dance Workshop", served as the Vice President of the "Chinese American Artists Association", and co-founded "Bridge and Gate Productions" with Dr. Christina Yao. From 1991 to 1995 he helped Alumni Association of University of Taiwan by directing a number of Chinese dramas. In June 1995, he founded the Academy of Chinese Performing Arts. In 2002, Mr. Chen founded the "Bridge and Gate International Cultural Foundation" with friends as the President.
Xinge Lin
Ms. Xinge Lin is the chief choreographer and instructor of the Shanghai Ballet Company . She has choreographed ‘Thunderstorm" , "Coppeli" (Chinese version) etc. And honorably won the prize of Excellent Choreography. With Shanghai Ballet Company, she visits Japan , France, Canada, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. In December 1993, she was invited by the Mastuyama Ballet of to be their guest instructor. She was invited to the United States by the San Francisco Ballet. In addition ,she is teaching at Contra Costa ballet school and the Diablo Ballet Company. She also was dean of Ballet School of Chinese Academy of Performing Arts during 1995-2000 . She is a former and excellent teacher.
Lihua Qian
Ms. Qian was a member of the Dancers Association of China and a star performer of the Shanghai Dance Troupe. She graduated from the Shanghai Dance Academy and was trained in classical dance, folk dance and ballet. She was the winner of many awards in numerousdance competitions, and has performed in Japan and the United States during tours with the troupe. She also performed in dance sequences in the TV series ?he Chinese Pantheon of Goods . Widely acclaimed for her dancing skills, she performed for Bridge and Gate Productions and is an instructor of folk dancing at ACPA.
Sherina Li
Ms. Li is a member of the Chinese Dancers Association. She graduated from Gansu Province Art Institute in 1980. After graduation, she was selected to play the leading role of Ying Niang in the Dance Drama the Silk Road Strewn with Flowers? which brough her the first place award at the Province Competition. In 1988; she was invited to Beijing to play the leading role in the dance drama song of Perpetual Regrets? She also toured many countries including the United States, Japan, France, Italy and Turkey, and was recognized as an outstanding actor and dancer.
Jie Chang
Ms. Chang is a member of the
Chinese Dancers Association. She started dance at age 6 in Nanjing Xiao Honghua Troupe, a well-known children's art school in China. Afterwards she became a professional dancer and worked in many literature and art organizations in Nanjing and Beijing. She has extensive experience in performing and teaching. Before she came to the U.S.A., she taught Chinese dance in Canada for 5 years and her students won a number of prizes in national dance competitions in Vancuver and Edmonton.
Ping Ye
Ms. Ye received her initial dancing training at her early age from Shanghai Youth Palace She later on was accepted by Shanghai Dancing Academy to Study regular and rigorous Western Ballet and traditional Chinese dancing arts. She graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the Shanghai Normal University. She also won her diploma from the Shanghai Musical Academy, major in composition and directorship. She is currently a member of both Shanghai Dancing Associations for children and Shanghai Dancers Association. Because of her contribution in teaching dancing, she earned her title of ?Excellent Educator ? from the Municipal Government.
Xiao Tao
Ms. Tao, an ethnic of Bulang, starting from age 7, was trained in Youth Dance Troupe Administritive District Cultural Palace. Xiao did many tours with the Singing and Dancing Troupe and performed dances of the Han, Dai, Aini, Wa, Yi and Zang ethnics. At age 11, Xiao participated in the First Youth Dance Meeting of Yunnan Province, played the main character in an Aini Dance Drama "Seedling Breeding" and won Excellent Performance Prize. At age 19, she was the main actress in the dance team of Tsinghua University, together with the team, she toured performing dances. The dances she performed were solo "Water", "Little Peacock", trio "The Poem of the Sea", historical dance poem " Remembrance of Fire in the Winter ", group dance "4:30". Xiao graduated from Tsinghua University in 1988. In January of 1989,she won the first prize in Beijing Dance Competition for the dance of "Little Peacock", choreographed by herself. Xiao came to the U.S. in 1990. Though abroad , she never stopped pursuing the art of dance.
Under the guidance and help of her brother , a first class national dance choreographer, she deepened her love for the dance culture of Yunnan ethnic minority and furthered her study of it.
Xiaowan Gong
Ms. Xiaowan Gong attended the Shanhai Normal University Department of Arts, and received her Master degreen at The S.F. Academy of Art College. She has spent over ten years on teaching youth artist painting. A mumber of her students have receives well-recognized awards internationally. The Shanghai Educational Board selected her book as textbook for high school students.
Fang Wang
Ms. Fang graduated from Shenyang Arts School for preschool children in 1983. In 1989, she graduated from Changchun University for teachers majoring in Arts. Ms. Wang has been teaching music to young children for decades. In her career, she has successfully cultivate many artistic personnel. Her student artistic troupe had gained numerous awards. Ms. Wang is a caring, patient teacher with solid grounding in music theory. She is a talented teacher with immense teaching experience.
Xiaoyan Lu
Ms. Lu graduated from Shanghai Drama Institute, emerson college, Boston (M.A. Direction-experting ) Boston University, school for Theatre Arts (MFA Theatred Ed). She is a professional actress in Shanghai People Art Theatre.
