A Brief Introduction of the Playwright Who Originally Wrote the "Malan Flower"

Ren Deyao, a renowned children's playwright, was born in 1918 in the City of Yangzhou in China. He graduated from the Department of Stage Design in the National Institute of Theatrical Arts. In 1947 he was commissioned by Song Qingling to establish the Chinese Children's Theater under the sponsorship of the Chinese Welfare Foundation. During a span of over 40 years as the head of the Theater, he wrote over 20 children's plays, three of which were made into movies. "Malan Flower", adapted from a Chinese folk tale, was his most outstanding masterpiece. Ever since it premiered in 1956 first in Beijing and later on in Shanghai, its popularity continued and flourished. For over half a century it has been well-received by generations of children in China. It even achieved success as far away as the former Soviet Union, Japan, Singapore and Australia, making "Malan Flower" one of the time-tested world class classics for children.

Performances of "Malan Flower" In and Outside of China

"Malan Flower" was written in 1955. In March of 1956 it premiered in Beijing for the celebration of the Grand Opening of the National Children's Theater for Performing Arts and was selected as an entry in the National Festival of Children's Plays held at that new theater. Not only did it win first place but the original playwright, Mr. Ren Deyao, also won 2nd place for his script. In September of 1956, the Children's Performing Arts Theater established by the China Welfare Organization premiered this play in Shanghai. Afterward, numerous theaters, performing arts organizations and local play groups all followed suit. Overt the past half century, at least 5 performances were shown in just the two major theaters in Beijing and Shanghai alone. In recent year, the 5th performance by the National Children's Theater for Performing Arts revised it into a musical play. There was even an English version of it that premiered in Beijing.

In 1960, it was made into a movie in China and shown all over China and Southeast Asian countries. In March of 1958, the play premiered in Moscow, Russia, followed by Tokyo in Japan. In April of 1958, it premiered in Russia as a ballet after it was revised. By July of 1980, it had been performed in Tokyo, Japan for a total of 73 times! In June of 1983 and again in July of 1993, it was performed by another theatrical group in Japan. In 1991, one of the entries in the World Festival for Plays by Amateurs held in Norway was an English version of "Malan Flower" that came from Singapore. In 1991, this renowned play premiered in Sydney, Australia.

The original script first appeared in the "Literature Monthly" magazine in 1956. Pictorial serials appeared in 1957. In April of 1958 it appeared as a children's story book. The Foreign Press published an English version of it in June of 1963. There was even one in Swahili in 1980.

We now have it rewritten, translated and revised into a musical drama with singing and dancing, in two separate versions, one in English and one in Chinese.
